Meet the people behind the scenes of Asian Women Cancer Group.

My association with the group started after a chance meeting with Bharti Patel, a former Chairperson, in 2007 and now the group has become my second family. I was elected as the Vice Chair of the group in 2011 when the remit of the group was extended to support all cancers and elected Chairperson in 2016. As a health professional I am actively involved in raising awareness about cancer in the local community. I am passionate about empowering those with cancer to have a voice to impact change and live life to the full. I am a Survivor’s co-ordinator on Cancer Research UK’S Harrow Relay for Life committee, a cancer voice for Macmillan Cancer Support and Bowel Cancer UK, a patients voice for Beating Bowel cancer and a volunteer on the Black/Minority Ethnic Cancer Panel. Winner of Asian Professional Public Service Award 2015.

I was introduced to the group by my sister Kalpana who was a group member. I was touched by the support given to my sister by the group during her journey so decided to become a volunteer helping with the secretarial duties which I enjoyed very much. I was elected as the Secretary to the group by AWCG committee members in 2013 and a Vice Chairperson in 2016. I am also on the committee to a local Pensions Group and hope to bring some of my account and admin experience to AWCG.
